White Mould in Soybeans

White mould, caused by the fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum can cause a significant yield reduction in soybeans so it is important to take a multi-pronged proactive approach to manage this disease.

White mould is an annual, reoccurring problem in Eastern Canada. Cool and moist conditions in July coincide with soybean flowering and are ideal for disease development. The conditions in the soybean canopy are more important to disease development than general climatic conditions. Dense plant canopies can be more disease-prone than more open canopies.

To ensure your Brevant seeds soybeans are protected from white mould consider the following practices:

  • Variety: There is no absolute resistance available to white mould (all varieties can get the disease under severe pressure), but differences in tolerance exist between varieties. Choosing soybean varieties that rate high for tolerance is important where there is a field history of white mould.   • Rotation: Rotation with a non-host crop is an effective means of reducing disease pressure in a field. Non-host crops include corn, sorghum, and small grains. Because sclerotia survive for up to ten years in the soil, rotation is only a partial solution.
  • Weed Management: White mould’s 400+ plant hosts include many broadleaf weeds. In addition to acting as host to the disease, weeds can also increase canopy density, which favours disease development.
  • Tillage (or no-till): Sclerotia germinate from the top two inches of soil. Below that depth, they can remain dormant for up to 10 years. Tillage can bury sclerotia, but it can also bring sclerotia to close to the surface where they can germinate. If the disease is new to the field, a tillage pass to bury the sclerotia followed by no till may help. Research studies have shown that zero tillage is generally superior to other tillage systems in limiting white mould.
  • Limiting Dense Canopy Formation: In areas of high risk, cultural practices that encourage early, dense canopy development may need to be avoided. This includes early planting, narrow rows, and excessive plant populations. However, these practices are also associated with high yielding soybeans, so a balance must be struck field by field.

Fungicide use for White Mould Management: Despite the use of cultural practices to limit the incidence, white mould may still develop. Foliar application of a fungicide, like Acapela will provide reliable protection against white mould. For the best protection, apply a fungicide preventatively prior to white mould infecting the senescing flowers.
